SPRING VACATION OUTFIT: TRENCH DRESS AND GINGHAM FRILLS

Happy Spring! I’m so delighted that the sun finally came out this weekend. In last week’s post I shared my perfect work dress and two won’t-break-the-bank spring accessories to welcome the season. Now my head is in total vacation mode so I’m buy things that I can not only wear right now but also on spring vacation. This trench dress is one of my favorite finds for the month and it’s now on sale for under $100. It also comes in the prettiest light pink, which I am totally drooling over.

This dress is available in both regular and petite sizing. I liked it better in the misses size 00 versus the petite which was a little shorter than I wanted. In the petite size it also would have been too tight in the bust area – you get a little more room all around with the standard sizing. I’m happy with the size 00 because I can wear it both by itself (arm holes are surprisingly not too big). And it also allows for fun layering options. After all, spring in New England is still very much a time for layers. What I also love about this dress is that it’s such a fresh take on the classic trench silhouette, has pockets and of course the khaki color makes it the ultimate in versatility.

Gingham has always been a favorite print of mine. I have more gingham tops in my closet than I care to admit and recently found two identical gingham button-downs in my closet – not sure what I was thinking there. This year with the dramatic sleeves and ruffles rendition of this classic print, I had to add this Zara one (if you like off-the-shoulder tops, this checked one is also so cute for summer and under $50). The material is really light weight and works from now through summer. It looks really cute with jeans as well.

Every year I go on a straw tote binge and this year is no different. The poms on this bag are such a cute detail and make for a pretty accent with almost any color. It’s also unusual to get lining at this price so that’s a nice plus. It also has a draw string close so your things don’t fall out. It’s also super roomy – bordering on overwhelming on my frame, but since I plan to carry this to the beach in addition to running around town, big is good. I also really like that this one is under $50 because I really beat up my straw bags.

This season is heavy on uniquely shaped bags. We’re seeing more and more circle bags, basket bags, and even cylindrical shapes with colorful and whimsical details. Here are a few of my current obsessions: this one with multi-colored pompoms, shades of berry petite tote, and my absolute favorite but also the most expensive, red pom pom and glass mirror beauty with stunning details that upgrade any outfit.

Flatforms continue to be trendy this year – great news for my feet and my practical side since I bought this metallic pair last year and really wasn’t sure if I’d get to wear past the season. You can see how I styled these last year in this post. Among this year’s best neutral flatforms are definitely this Sole Society pair. They’re super comfortable and so well priced at under $80. Unfortunately, last time I checked, most sizes seem to have run out in all three color options…a lucky few who are size 5 might still be able to nab a pair. I have a feeling these will get restocked so if you them, check back periodically on the Nordy site.
