Hounds-tooth has always been one of my favorite patterns. It has an austerity I like and pairs well with both jeans and the midi skirts I love so much. Adding a hounds-tooth coat to your wardrobe adds a little touch of sophistication for not a lot of money – this one is under $100 on sale. While I was hunting for options I found several that I love. I linked my favorites at a few different price points – grab one while you can because it won’t go out of style.

Most of the under $100 hounds-tooth coat options are relatively light weight but when you layer over a thick sweater, and add a hat and scarf, it does a pretty good job of keeping the chill at bay. I also have a bunch of other layers on underneath the sweater. I almost always have a tank as well as a long-sleeved tissue tee under my sweaters. I would never survive winter in Boston without the layers. My favorite layering tees are these under $15 and the J.Crew tissues tees in both crew and turtleneck. The turtlenecks in particular are fabulous for wearing under wool or cashmere sweaters if you have sensitive skin.

Since hounds-tooth is inherently menswear inspired I sometimes go purist and style it very simply with low block heeled boots in black or camel, plus jeans. But if you can’t resist a little hint of the feminine, as I couldn’t here, the addition of slender sandals and a sparkly clutch is all it takes to transform this neutral outfit to something more unique.

Speaking of clutches, I’m obsessed with mini-bags and clutches. They’re not the most practical if you like to carry a lot of things but they serve as good medicine for my winter doldrums. And so I indulge my love of tiny, sparkly bags. I rounded up of my favorites here for you in the scroll bar at the bottom. I hope they add some fun to your winter outfits. Best of all, these can all be worn year-round and do double-duty for day and night occasions.

As you probably know if you’re familiar with this blog, I don’t wear jeans all that often. When I do, they have to be the softest things ever. These distressed girlfriend jeans are the most comfortable pair I’ve bought in a while, rivaling the softness of my all time favorite denim brand, AG. I bought mine in 25R from the store and since this style is meant to be rolled at the hem, I didn’t need to get them altered. These are very flattering if you have wider hips or are pear shaped (like me!). Probably not so great if you have a straighter or narrower figure.
