I’ve always loved Fall fashion and particularly beautiful outerwear so I’m having a hard time not buying up every gorgeous Fall jacket I see. I keep reminding myself that I’m a wardrobe minimalist and having too many coats, no matter how pretty they are, goes against my wardrobe philosophy. This plaid camel/warm beige long “coat” was impossible to resist because it’s simultaneously eye-catching and versatile. Those two things don’t often come together and when they do, it’s worth the buy. I’ve also linked to 3 other jackets I’ve been salivating over below. I put “coat” in quotes here because this is really more of a long cardigan or coatigan rather than a coat.

I love the dramatic length of this coat and the softness of it. In cool weather I always want to snuggle up in a blanket and this coat makes you feel like you’re bundled up in one. It’s definitely more of a Fall than Winter coat but can easily take you through the first part of Winter with some layering. I found it to be really warm even though it’s relatively lightweight and unlined. The coat has a lot of striking design features, like the oversized lapels, beautiful drape, and vee-shaped slit in the back. It also has really deep pockets which you can see from some of the snaps, so you can really get that warm cozy feeling! Last but not least, it has one set of buttons at the waist, creating a really slimming and elegant shape when buttoned up. Buttons are also so important for practicality as I discovered when I moved to New England. On a windy day, those open front coats can start to function as sails!

Fall is about rich colors and luxe fabrics. Mustard is always a favorite Fall color of mine and goes so well with almost all the other neutrals, including navy, brown, grey and of course black. Here I created a textured look by mixing prints and shades of mustard and camel from the plaid of the coat, to the small mustard/white print of my shell, to my leopard pumps. And, I almost forgot, my retro beige sunglasses. These sunnies were one of my best buys from Loft ever and are currently on sale for only $12. Great deal because unlike other sunnies in this price range they’re really nice quality.

This ruffled shell is perfect for Fall layering. I mostly prefer sleeveless base layers because you can layer over them without creating extra bulk in the arms. You can also see this shell styled here with a completely different color palette – versatile right? It’s so easy to throw a cardigan on top of this shell and have a classic option for work. You could always add another layer (like this coat) on top if you live in a colder climate. I love the print of this shell so much that I’ll probably also wear it as the second layer, worn over a tissue turtleneck for late Fall. So look out for a re-styled look in a couple of months.

About my jeans. I rarely wear jeans or any kind of pants really in the Summer but I start to wear them a little more in the Fall and Winter. One of my favorite brand for the last few years running has been AG. They seem to make jeans that are flattering to women with curves and have a nice range of styles and rises. I’ve also found them to be pretty petite friendly despite not coming in petite sizes – some styles need the hem to be shortened but the fit everywhere else is really spot on for my body type. I also own the AG Prima (also mid-rise) and absolutely love it for casual Fridays at the office as well as weekend wear.

I love this cropped fringe hem black pair for a more trendy look – ratty hems are in! The small amount of distressing strikes the right balance between fashion and comfort for me. They’re mid-rise and meant to be cropped but will be full length on most petites. If I want to show a little ankle, I’d lose the fringe and just roll up a little. These are currently on sale and still available in most sizes and at only around $132 are a really good seasonal buy. If you live on the West Coast or somewhere with mild weather these would be an all-season pair. Another big plus for me with these jeans is where the rip hits on my leg. As a petite I’m usually frustrated that the shredding is below my knee…this one hits right at the knee, extending slightly higher, which I really like.

I bought these jeans in size 25. Since my usual size fluctuates between 25 and 26 I’d say these run maybe a teeny bit large. If you have a bigger lower body like me then you’ll love these. I think they’re stretchy enough that they would also look great on a narrower figure but if you have slender hips and legs, I’d size down.

I found this faux velvet hat in the clearance section at Forever 21 for $9 and love it for adding a little extra flair to any outfit. I couldn’t find mine or anything similar online but I’ll keep my eyes open and link one as it pops up. With velvet being a key Fall trend there are bound to be several options in the coming months. If you’re looking for a more casual way to wear velvet, a velvet baseball cap (so easily styled with a dress as seen in this post) is a fun option. I love this gorgeous deep blue velvet one with either dresses or pants. It’s also perfect for adding a subtle pop of color if you like to dress in neutrals and a great way to try the velvet trend for under $15.

Last but not least, I wanted to share some of the other Fall coats I’m eyeing. My first pick is this
jacquard mid-length floral jacket with red faux fur collar. If you like to make a statement, this is a must-have. I have a floral coat from a million years ago that’s basically the same idea as this one and every year it gets more compliments than most of my new coats – you can see it in this post.
If something less bold is more your style, this long wool-blend khaki/green coat is stunning. It’s also belted and on petites, will be full coverage and could probably be used into Winter. It’s double-breasted, which I find to be so flattering and also has a self belt (as well as buttons) so it’s both practical and waist whittling
Another drool-worthy but much more muted option is this draped trench in a gorgeous stone color from Nordstrom. It’s from my one of my favorite outerwear brands and so chic. If you wear a lot of jeans I can’t think of a better Fall jacket to grab. I haven’t tried this one on but it looks like it might be better suited to long torsos than short but if you like it you should definitely order and try it yourself. It’s too cute not to and the price is so good.
If you have a moment I’d love to hear from you in the comments on which coat is most your style! Thanks for reading and happy Fall transitioning! xo
