September is one of my favorite months. There’s a promise of new things as the season changes and a the air takes on a refreshing briskness. I love that at this time of year we have flexibility with what we wear and how we style it. It’s not so hot that you’re forced to wear as little as possible, and not so cold that you have no choice but to wear a jacket. We can layer for style when we want to but not be compelled to, which is nice. In these transitional weeks I tend to combine my Summer favorites with one or two Fall pieces to get the most out of my wardrobe.
This blush lace skirt is perfect for those who like to be girly but still be practical. Nothing says feminine like lace (except maybe tulle, another big Fall trend). I have my eye on a tulle skirt next because it’s great to still be able to dress “like a princess” as my daughter says, when you’re all grown-up. Speaking of Fall trends, New York Fashion Week (#NYFW16) is coming up and I’m so excited to see some of Fall’s trends brought to life on the runway. I’m expecting to see lots of prints, velvet, furs, dramatic design, and in footwear, some serious platforms combined with menswear-inspired styles like loafers. I love platform loafers and have been on the hunt for one I like that fits my budget. Some of the
Stella McCartney ones are among my favorites but at over $600 they will have to stay on my wish list for the moment:)
Speaking of Fashion Week if you want to see experience some it remotely, head to the NYFW website! You can watch many (though not all) of the shows here for yourself! Do any of the trends catch your eye as something you’d love to or have been wearing this year?
While ultra-feminine pieces might seem hard to pull off and sometimes too girly, pairing them with classic pieces like a denim jacket balances these delicate pieces out and makes them wearable for everyday. I suspect you already have a denim jacket in your closet, but if you don’t, I highly recommend grabbing one. I can’t think of a more perfect piece for late summer and early Fall, and a denim jacket is an excellent layer under your winter coat or under a heavier vest when the temps start to drop more. I’ve linked my current favorite petite-friendly denim jackets at different price points at the bottom of the post.
Another key piece for Fall and easy wardrobe update is a good felt or wool hat. I love a medium brimmed somewhat floppy hat and this light caramel shade pairs so well with any color palette. Since I have a small head I tend to go for hats that come in different sizes versus one size fits all. I grabbed this one in XS. It also comes in bright red which could be such a fun wardrobe addition!
I’ve been experimenting more with lower-heeled footwear recently. I used to shy away from this style because I have thick ankles and anything that ties at the ankle is generally not the most flattering, but I couldn’t resist this color and the adorable lace-up style! I love the closed toes for Fall, the ballet/lace-up styling. Plus there is a tiny heel, which is better for me than a total flat. This pair is very comfortable for extended walking – I didn’t need to break it in at all. Also, it’s under $35 which makes it the perfect trendy buy for Fall.
I got this ruffled top mainly for work since it layers so well under cardigans and blazers. The mustard color is beautiful with navy, black or grey. As with most of the things I buy though, I like to be able to wear them in more than one way, so here I wore it more casually, knotted at the front and paired with lace. It goes so nicely with pink and the warm tones of the hat. I’m also planning to wear this top with jeans and a long cardigan so I have plans for this little shell:)
The skirt is fully lined with a silky base layer and the lace layer sitting on top, which I really like. I also want to point out that the lace is pretty resistant to snags and pulls. I sat on several rough surfaces and dredged my rings over it once or twice with no rips or snagging – that’s an A+ for a lace skirt. The waist is elasticized, making it ideal for casual wear. I got mine is size S and it rides a tiny bit little lower in the waist than I would like (for reference my waist is 23″).
So if you were thinking of retiring your flirty summer dresses and skirts now that temps are dropping, you don’t have to! Grab your denim jacket and a felted hat and you have an immediately updated Fall look using clothes you already have.
Thanks for reading and have a great week! xo

I agree September and October are great months! Those two months allow you still wear your summer and fall items. I love how you are transitioning your summer items into fall!
