What to wear to work can be a tricky question on some days.  I’m not a morning person and my creativity is usually at an all-time low in the early am, particularly when I’m between seasons, like now.  The good news is that with a few tips you can update your wardrobe so that it works for the rest of Summer heading well into the Fall. In this post I’m sharing 3 tips on how to build a work wardrobe that will wear well across both seasons.

1. Choose fabrics that can work well now or in cooler weather.  I usually go with fabrics that are light enough to work right now but can easily be layered over. Crepe or silk are always good choices that wear well across seasons because they’re light enough for warmer weather and thin enough that you can layer over them without creating bulk. This crepe dress is super light and I can easily layer a cropped sleeve jacket over it next month or wear this lacy silk-trim camisole under. A sleeveless turtleneck dress is one of my favorites as a cross-over dress between seasons.

2. Start to buy styles that lean towards Fall but can still play in Summer with the right styling. For me, this usually means longer sleeves versus sleeveless, lower hemlines and higher necklines. Choker necklines are really trendy this year so there will be plenty of these to choose from. I also love anything turtleneck but in a light material so I can make it work for end of summer in addition to Fall. I love this mock turtleneck dress for a casual Friday work outfit layered under a long cardigan. One of 2017’s most popular hemlines is the midi length, which is a good one for the office as well as for the cooler months.
3. Go for colors that coordinate with your existing wardrobe. I buy as many pieces as I can in colors that I love and wear often, whether or not they’re “in” that season. For example, I love jewel tones colors and always buy up great pieces in yellow/gold (like this yellow velvet midi skirt), oranges and greens. Of course, neutral colors like black, grey and camel are no-brainers and easy to build on. But you can get the same versatility from using less common colors as your neutrals – like wine/burgundy and dark green.
Nude pumps are always a wardrobe essential regardless of season. Mine are very old but I like this mid-heel pair for work and every day wear, and this two-tone pair for a neutral pump that’s more dressy. Also adore these scalloped d’orsay pumps but these are out of my budget.

This faux leather over-sized clutch is a fun alternative to a typical work bag and it’s under $25. The color is super versatile and perfect for now and Fall. Unless you need to carry a laptop around, it will house everything you need – plenty of room for daily essentials and includes a zippered inside pocket as well as zippered compartment in the back. It also comes in this stylish cognac/navy color that I’m also eyeing.

Last but not least I’m in love with my new translucent pink sunnies. This is a perfect color for year-round wear. It’s translucence makes it chameleon-like and it compliments your outfit no matter what color you’re wearing. It’s also a perfect size for smaller faces and the frame feels nice and substantial despite this pair being under $50.

Hope you have a great week and cheers to an easy time getting ready for work! xo
