CASUAL FALL STYLE: RUST DRESS AND ELBOW-PATCH SWEATER

Fall Fashion Dress and Sweater
DRESS: NORDSTROM | SWEATER: ASOS | HAT: FOREVER 21 similar HERE | SANDALS: ZARA similar HERE or HERE | SUNGLASSES: old, similar HERE, also obsessed with THESE under $25!

It’s the first week of Fall! Do I look a little like a pumpkin in this outfit? Honestly, I love this dress and the rust color so I don’t care if I do:) I love anything in the rust/orange section of the color wheel and this one is actually a really great color that mixes well with both neutrals as well other Fall colors like plum and burgundy. Even hunter green would look so pretty with this.

This day started out cool and then warmed up as many Fall days in Boston tend to do, so one outfit formula I rely on quite a bit is pairing a dress with a knit that I can either drape around my shoulders, carry in my bag or tie around my waist when I’m not wearing it. Scroll down to see the dress with my cute new elbow-patch knit – perfect petite-fit and available in petite, regular and tall sizes!

The first thing I wanted to mention about this dress is that I realize the neck looks really low. This has a lot to do with chest size so if it looks like it’s too deep for you I wouldn’t discount it based just on my pics. I love that the dress can transition between warmer temps and cooler Fall weather with the addition of a knit, like I styled it, or with an over-sized chunky turtleneck for a casual chic look. Also, one of my favorite features = the pockets:) The A-line cut of the dress is super flattering and feminine and I love that it fits like a glove on the torso. I have a narrow frame on the top and the tops of most dresses tend to be too big even in my regular size. I grabbed this in XS and it was a perfect fit. I probably won’t wear this dress by itself again since we’re solidly in Fall now but the scoop neck is perfect for layering over a button-down for an easy work look. I wore it over this BR shirt  (on sale right now with extra 40% off at checkout) and the blue/rust look so good together. Plus it’s a great way to get more mileage out this dress.
My striped sweater is a new purchase and the first time I’ve ever owned anything with patched elbows. I’m not sure why I’ve never bought this look before because I love it – it adds a little charm to any look. I can tell this sweater is going to get a ton of wear because it’s striped and you can wear stripes with anything. And the little faux suede patches will keep me coming back to this piece whenever I need a little accent color for an outfit. This would be so cute with a pair of jeans, Fall booties, over-sized scarf and Fall booties. Speaking of Fall booties, did you grab a new pair this Fall or do you have ones from before that will take you through the season? For casual wear, I have a low-heeled neutral pair from last year that you can’t beat for comfort – found this very similar pair from this year. I also have a pair of military lace-up booties that are a little more striking. But I’m totally lusting after a new pair of booties in this season’s statement texture, velvet. I definitely have a velvet crush – what an amazing fabric.
Right now my hat is the only velvet (or faux velvet) thing I own and I’ve been wearing it a lot – twice in the last week actually. You can see it here from last week’s post styled with the best plaid coat ever. I couldn’t resist it despite it being so early in the Fall. If you’re looking for a statement Fall jacket you might like the post – I linked 4 coats all under $200 that I absolutely love.

I wore metallic flatforms with this outfit to make the look more interesting. I love mixing styles – feminine with masculine, retro with contemporary, and streamlined metallics with flared feminine styles. These shoes are the perfect counterpoint to the cut of this dress and the velvet of the hat. My pair’s from Zara but I also found a less expensive dupe (see in scroll bar below). The rubber sole with traction is genius for the city and for rainy days. I was really impressed with soft they are too – so springy, kind of like walking on clouds.

If flatforms or metallics all over aren’t your thing, sneakers or Fall boots are a great substitute too. I love these beige New Balance sneakers with a more subtle gold accent on the side for running errands and really anything where casual will fly.

Have a great week and thanks for reading. As always, I love to hear from you so please leave me a comment or just say hi! xo
