FALL 3 LAYER PILE-UP: THE ESSENTIAL VEST

I take a great deal of joy in the art of layering. I layer purely for layering itself. Sometimes I even layer too much and get annoyed that the layers didn’t fall just right. But that may be a story for another time. Today’s post highlights some simple layering techniques that can make late Fall and Winter more tolerable if you’re a cold weather wimp like me.

Like most of my Fall outfits, I started with a long-sleeve base layer. This heat-tech turtleneck claims to be bio-warming, insulating and moisture-wicking. I don’t know what bio-warming means but I can attest that this turtleneck does indeed keep you warm! I also like how it fits and drapes, so I’m planning to buy several more of them. They come in 8 colors, including all the basic neutrals. For seasonal colors, I like the wine (wearing here), dark green and red (which really has more of an orange-brown hue).

With my base layer on, I’m usually good to move on to my choice of wrap dress, which is a style that’s classic and wearable all year. Fall fashion is full of gorgeous textures, prints and rich colors. In addition to deep reds, I love mustard tones, and rich floral prints for this season. My dress here is from Zara. I also recently bought this pretty, dark blue chiffon dress to wear belted, and have this stunning mustard tone wrap dress on my Santa list. This down vest is a great top layer for average Fall days in New England. It gives you that warm toasty feeling and is a big help against the wind. I grew up being told by my mother that protecting the chest was vital to guard against colds and I still go by that instruction whether or not it has any merit. The color I’m wearing is described as “Pink” on the site. It looks more like a light garnet color to me though sometimes I can’t tell the difference between navy and black (I know, crazy!) so please correct me if I’m wrong. Anyway, it comes in several really cute colors. My favorites other than the one I’m wearing are the brown, wine and purple. The black is also a no-brainer for casual outfits, taking a run, or layering under your black puffer if you want a sleek look.

I also love this down vest -I bought a similar one from Patagonia a couple of years ago and love it. It’s pricier but extremely warm and has held up through a couple of winters already and still looks new.

And last but not least, I’m eyeing this silver metallic vest. So fun while also being practical.

You may have seen these faux fur slides in my Instagram stories recently. I’m obsessed with anything that has fuzz or feathers right now. Mine are Zara – I also like this really similar pair under $40, which are extremely walkable.
