WORK STYLE: FLORAL LACE PENCIL SKIRT

Work Style

When it comes to work style I have a few tried and true combinations that I fall back on a lot. This is one of them – a button-down shirt tucked into a pencil skirt with a cardigan layered over. This is a classic formula that works so well no matter what your shape or size. Once you have a few pencil skirts and cardigans you like, the opportunities for mixing and matching are endless.

CARDIGAN: J. CREW | COLLARED BLOUSE: H&M | SKINNY BELT: NORDSTROM | SKIRT: EXPRESS | HANDBAG: COLE HAAN (similar HERE or one of my all-time favorites HERE) | PUMPS: SOLE SOCIETY (currently available in all sizes and runs true to size)

This lace skirt is one of my favorite pencil skirts right now because who doesn’t love lace. It’s lined to about a couple of inches above the knee giving the skirt a little bit of allure. The color is just as easy to match as black so it’s the perfect partner for all of the Spring brights I’ve been gravitating to. I’ve especially been drawn to high contrast looks lately – like reds and blues together. With two strong colors in play, I kept the shirt to a simple white.

The shirt is one of the two I picked up recently at H&M because the fit is so good for slim shoulders and slender torsos. The other one I grabbed was a black and white vertical stripe that you can see here if you missed my post on combining florals with stripes. I rarely wore collared shirts or blouses in my younger days but as I get older I’m really into button-downs, particularly white ones that you can layer over or under anything.

That brings me to my cobalt cardigan – a key player in my wardrobe. I love cardigans in general and for work I find cardigans to be a more contemporary alternative to suit jackets. They’re also more comfortable than suit jackets. If I’m going to spend 8+ hours in something I want it to be soft and move with me.

I’ve bought this particular cardigan in multiple colors over the years and have worn all of them a ton. Such a great piece for both in and out of the office. The color closest to the one I’m wearing here is selling out super fast but Bright Grotto is very similar and is still available in most sizes. For weekends, I wear these cardigans with jeans or thrown over dresses when I need a little layer (which is always – I’m always cold!)

About the handbag, I can’t seem to get away from red bags recently. This is the second one I’ve bought and my excuse was that it’s a different style from my smaller red bag haha. Speaking of my other red bag, I’m so excited that it’s back in stock because I got so many questions on it when I posted it here and at the time it sold out within days. If you’re looking for a smaller red bag that can be worn cross-body or as a shoulder bag, this is a great pick in the under $500 range. I especially like that this brand is not yet super popular so you won’t see it on everyone else.

I’m sure I’ll get off my red bag kick sooner or later but for now you may see this one a few more times. I love the satchel structure and size of the bag. It holds a lot but doesn’t overwhelm petite frames. The leather is really high-quality and it has metal feet (which always makes me happy) and also a strap for cross-body use. I love a well-made satchel with clean lines and linked a couple of others that I like. If you want a bag that can do double-duty for work and weekend these are worth checking out.

Hope you’re having a great week and thanks for reading!
